2008 Summer Internship

The scholars have been hired and we are preparing for another exciting summer, our 11th internship year! The core activity of Community Scholars involves two summer internship programs. First Year Program: Each year we hire approximately 25 first year scholars who research broad issues of state-wide importance. In the First Year program participants develop public policy research skills and, more generally, perspective and a modicum of sophistication. First Year Scholars undergo one month of rigorous training on issues related to the community in preparation for their research. Second Year Program: We hire approximately five second year scholars each year, drawn from the First Year participants of the previous year. The research they conduct has a more specific and local focus and examines this policy area in terms of its impact on El Paso or the immediate region. Each summer we also hire five or six former Second Year Scholars of college age who serve as mentor-supervisors for current First and Second Year Scholars. We are convinced that the selective re-involvement of participants in successive years greatly enhances the value of our program both to the community and to the participants, as future civic and intellectual leaders. The six topics the scholars will research this summer are: ANALYZING EL PASO'S ECONOMIC CLIMATE, BORDER BRIDGE WAIT TIMES, EL PASO'S GRADUATION RATES, IMPACT OF THE AGING POPULATION ON EL PASO, INVENTORY OF THE ARTS IN EL PASO, and SUBPRIME LENDING & FLORECLOSURES (May 5, 2008 - July 25, 2008)

Rebuild Day 2008

"Rebuild Day 2008," formerly known as Christmas in April is a day when volunteers come together and help repair or rebuild low-income housing for residents, including the elderly and disabled, who are living in unsafe conditions. 500 volunteers are expected and the group from Community Scholars will work on one specific house to paint, do yard work, repair fixtures, and anything else that is needed. In 2007 17 homes were repaired by 450 volunteers in El Paso alone! (April 26, 2008 - April 26, 2008)
